Mr. Ofonmbuk Nelson stands out as one of Akwa Ibom State’s most dedicated professionals in agricultural investment, rural development, and public-sector administration. Trained as an Agricultural Economist, he has built a distinguished career that spans academia, public service, investment management, and community development. His work continues to shape agricultural policy, youth empowerment, and the state’s economic diversification agenda.
Academic and Professional Foundations
Mr. Nelson’s training as an Agricultural Economist laid a strong foundation for his work in the public and development sectors. Over the years, he has broadened this background with additional expertise in investment analysis, marketing, and management, making him a multi-skilled professional capable of driving complex agricultural and economic initiatives.
His passion for teaching and knowledge-sharing led him to serve as a Senior Lecturer at the College of Arts and Science, Nung Ukim, where he contributed to shaping the next generation of agribusiness practitioners, economists, and public-sector professionals.
Career in Agricultural Investment and Public Service
Today, Mr. Nelson serves as Director and Head of Agricultural Investment at the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP). In this role, he plays a central part in identifying, structuring, and managing agricultural investments that support the state’s long-term food security and economic growth strategies. His leadership ensures that agricultural projects are viable, sustainable, and aligned with broader development goals.
He also holds the strategic position of Secretary, Akwa Ibom State Agriculture and Food Security Committee, a body critical to the state’s planning for food sufficiency, agricultural modernization, and private-sector participation. His analytical skills, administrative competence, and depth of sectoral knowledge make him a key driver in policy formulation and implementation.
Experience with Development Projects
Mr. Nelson is an experienced bureaucrat who has supervised numerous World Bank–assisted agricultural and rural development projects in Akwa Ibom State. His contributions in this area reflect a deep familiarity with project design, monitoring and evaluation, community engagement, and institutional coordination.
Through these assignments, he has helped advance interventions that support rural livelihoods, improve food production, strengthen agricultural value chains, and enhance the capacity of farmers and local institutions.
Leadership in Civic and Professional Circles
Beyond the public sector, Mr. Nelson has distinguished himself in civic leadership. He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Uyo, where he championed humanitarian service, youth development, and social intervention programmes. His leadership within Rotary underscores his commitment to ethical service, community impact, and collaborative problem-solving.
Traditional Honour and Community Development
In recognition of his contributions to development and service, Mr. Nelson was honoured by his homestead, Ikot Obio Eka in Etinan Local Government Area, with the traditional title of Etieyen. This title reflects the community’s appreciation for his integrity, leadership, and enduring contributions to local progress.
Demonstrating his dedication to grassroots empowerment, he spearheaded a computer appreciation training programme for youths in Ikot Obio Eka, helping young people gain digital skills essential for modern employment and entrepreneurship. This initiative is one of several through which he has worked to improve opportunities for the next generation.
